I came home to what I thought should be my sleeping iMac G5 (2.1GHz, 1.5GB RAM, 10.4.9), and found it was not. upon reading the system log, the following came up:

Apr 20 13:25:38 [computer name] kernel[0]: IOBluetoothHCIController::restartShutdownWL this is a wake from sleep
Apr 20 13:25:38 [computer name] kernel[0]: System Wake
Apr 20 13:25:38 [computer name] kernel[0]: Wake event 0020
Apr 20 13:25:38 [computer name] kernel[0]: USB caused wake event (OHCI)
Apr 20 13:25:38 [computer name] kernel[0]: USB caused wake event (EHCI)
Apr 20 13:25:38 [computer name] kernel[0]: IOBluetoothHCIController::terminateWL .. done
Apr 20 13:25:38 [computer name] kernel[0]: FireWire (OHCI) Apple ID 52 built-in: handleSelfIDInt - received quads == 0. issuing bus reset
Apr 20 13:25:39 [computer name] kernel[0]: CSRHIDTransitionDriver::probe:
Apr 20 13:25:39 [computer name] kernel[0]: CSRHIDTransitionDriver::start before command
Apr 20 13:25:39 [computer name] kernel[0]: UniNEnet::monitorLinkStatus - Link is up at 100 Mbps - Full Duplex
Apr 20 13:25:39 [computer name] configd[70]: AppleTalk startup
Apr 20 13:25:44 [computer name] kernel[0]: CSRHIDTransitionDriver::stop
Apr 20 13:25:44 [computer name] kernel[0]: IOBluetoothHCIController::start Idle Timer Stopped
Apr 20 13:25:44 [computer name] kernel[0]: Registering For 802.11 Events
Apr 20 13:25:44 [computer name] kernel[0]: [HCIController][setupHardware] AFH Is Supported
Apr 20 13:25:45 [computer name] configd[70]: AppleTalk startup complete

I have set the Bluetooth to be off (and the Airport off as well), and am unsure of the log entries above. I think I have only had a similar situation (system wake at an odd time) once before. I did perform the Security update 2007004 (I think that's how it read this morning, albeit I was bit sleepy) early this morning before getting ready for work.

Any thoughts?

It looks like a USB device caused the system to wake up. Perhaps you accidentally pressed one of the keyboard keys or inadvertantly clicked the mouse? If Bluetooth and Airport were off, then that's the only other thing that can wake the computer (apart from ethernet, but that'd result in a different message).

ah, I misinterpreted there. only weird thing is, I left my place before 6am, and got home after 4. now unless something fell on the keyboard and slipped off it, or strange animals were running around the table, no one was at home to play with the computer. spoooky!

My USB optical mouse often activates all by itself for no obvious reason. I wouldn't worry about it too much.

sneeky mouse issues?

Would that be the reason why my iBook is soundly sleeping on its little table across the room, and I hear it make the waking noise, look over to see that the blinking sleep indicator light has stopped blinking. I watch it for a while and it goes back to sleep, making the "I'm going to sleep" sound? I have wondered what was causing it.

And... is the wireless mouse the reason that when opening and waking up, sometimes it goes right back to sleep, even after starting an action?

Sorry to jump into this possibly not related question... but it seemed the time to ask if they were related.

Thanks, geekosaur...

Re: sneeky mouse issues?

Optical != wireless; it means it doesn't have a mouse ball like older mice. USB = wired, except for a few oddball mice. My point was that the optical mice (uses an LED instead of a ball to detect motion) seem to have a lot of false events: not only are they prone to suddenly "wake up" when idle, but IME they also have a tendency to jump around the screen a lot when they are being moved.

That said, wireless (Bluetooth) mice are also generally optical these days and would have the same issues. But you can tell the computer to not wake up on Bluetooth mouse events (System Preferences > Keyboard and Mouse > Bluetooth > Allow Bluetooth devices to wake this computer). (This won't help if it's a non-Bluetooth wireless mouse, like some Logitech wireless mice.)

The "immediately going back to sleep" thing I've also seen on my iBook. I think that's a confused Power Management Unit, though: the computer should not immediately go back to sleep by itself, it should instead restart the sleep timer.

Re: sneeky mouse issues?

Maybe it needed a class of warm milk . Or that 3rd cup of water before going to sleep
