I'm wondering if anyone has any tips for exactly what should be done following a kernel panic? I know to repair permissions, but I thought, especially considering all the new discussion about putting together a FAQ, that a maybe a step by step guide would a really good thing?

Because yes, kernel panic this morning but I don't want to fumble around doing more bad than good.

WOW.

Hold down the following keys simultaneously: Option-Command(aka Open Apple key)-Asterik

Now hold down Option-Command-Plus Sign to zoom and Option-Command-Minus Sign to zoom out.

Hold down Option-Command-Asterik again to turn this function off.

The kicker: Hold down Control-Option-Command-Asterik to invert the colors on your screen in an otherworldly, negative monochrome scheme. Do the same key-combo to return to normal colors.

OS X is just simply amazing! Finding new things every day solidifies this fact!

since OSX has the unix terminal, i have this question:

i am new to unix. don't know much about it, but i want to get more out of osx by learning a thing or two about the language. so...can any unix people out there recommend either good websites or books/resources where i can teach myself the language?

thanks =)

This is something I’ve wondered for a while: is there any way to change the runlevel in OS X without rebooting, as there is in Linux and Sys V-derived systems? Logging in as >Console provides some of this functionality, but in a very limited way between two runlevels. SystemStarter also provides limited functionality, but only starts or stops on service at a time, IIRC. I want to start and stop batches of services associated with different levels, with the ultimate goal to switch between single-user and full graphical multi-user modes without rebooting.

I am running 10.2.6 on a G4 tower, 733, and lately every time I get home the net just isn't working. I have DSL so I am usually always connected. I have to either reboot the computer or unplug and replug the DSL cable to get ti working again. What might be causing this, and how can I fix it?

Also, is it a big deal if I just leave the computer on all the time? I don't sleep it because my friends have trouble with their Macs on wake, I just leave it on and turn the monitor off when I am not using it.

Now is where your vote really counts for the future of the community. In the interests of democracy, keeping [info]macosx alive, and overzealous use of fun lj-polls, the preliminary poll and campaign period for maintainership is over, and I have put together the maintainership voting poll for you to choose who you would like as your maintainer. Make your choices wisely.

To the 1200-some-odd members of the [info]macosx community: you have until Sunday afternoon (8/31/03, around 2-4PM CST) to vote. At that time I will review the poll and post the user to become maintainer, and they will need to reply via LJ comment to acknowledge and accept the position. After that point we'll contact each other via email and get things all sorted.

A few things to note... )

Poll #174228 maintainer

Anyone else you'd like to nominate for any specific position like style consultant, FAQ/memories creator, additional moderation, etc?

Just to be difficult: Use this space to subtract 1 vote from anyone that you REALLY don't want as maintainer. You must explain why and have a valid reason.

Okay, so I'm temporarily without phone or internet and i'm isolated from the world (I just managed to eke out this entry and vote in the maintainer poll).

I have a Sony Ericsson t68i that I would love to use as a Bluetooth modem for the time being. This is a great idea that was trumpeted all over the Bluetooth fanfare, and now the time has come to try it. So I tried it, set up the modem, and then it was dialing and it said "no carrier detected. Please check your settings and try again."

Has anyone succesfully done this with a t68i and can show me the way? I think it has something to do with my modem list - the list offers a bajillion choices, and I don't know which one to choose or if I need to activate something on my phone or my service first.

UPDATE: I just read up on this and I think I need GPRS - some sort of wireless service. That sucks if it's true. Someone wanna fill me in on details?

Thanks in advance!

I've heard that Panther changes the way you cmd-tab through applications; but all the explanations of how it works in 10.3 just confused me further. So... what exactly does it change? How does cmd-tabbing work now?

I just clicked on a link, using Safari and it opened Internet Explorer. So Safari can't handle FTP itself?

I searched around for settings for a default app for FTP, I normally just use the terminal. Did I miss a setting somewhere, or is this just the way things are? What would it do on a system that doesn't have IE?
