I don't think I was the only one here who had problems with the sound balance randomly changing itself. I thought that the .2.6 update fixed this...at least for a while...but it just started happening again. My balance was almost 50% closer to the left than the right, totally randomly. This is so annoying! It had to do with the volume buttons on the keyboard, it only changes the balance when I press those. But I use those alll the time. Grr. Why are there so many problems with those darn buttons?
On a good note, the customization of the iTunes music detection in XJournal is so awesome. I highly recommend it over iJournal. Except I can't figure out how to edit previous entries with it, I don't think it's possible yet.

are you absolutely sure it's not another program changing the sound settings? i specifically removed code from my audio recorder that could change global sound settings.--some other programs will change global sound settings and not revert when you quit.
This has been happening pretty much since day one for me. The only audio-using program I run is iTunes - I have 4.01 currently. I'm pretty sure it has to do with the volume adjusting buttons on the keyboard (PowerBook G4), because with the sound output prefpane open, if I turn the volume up and down for a while, I can actually watch the balance start to slither off to one side or the other, quite sporadically. It's bizarre!
Just as a data point, I observe the same behavior when using the volume buttons on the Apple keyboard attached to my PowerBook G4. My difference is that the balance has never gone to the left, it always goes to the right.
I'm running 10.2.6 with iTunes 4.0.1 on a 12" PowerBook G4.
This is strange but nice someone is mentioning this. Didn't know how it happend but it happend to me too.
I had hooked my imac800 up to my stereoset, and thought it was te plug that was corrupt or something like it. But one day somehow the ballance had turned all the way to the right (or left) Now I know why
I was just about to post about this. I've had this problem for quite some time as well -- and I thought the 10.2.6 update fixed it, but just like two days ago I realized it didn't. >< I'm using an iBook G3, though, so it's not just powerbooks.
I mainly notice the problem after I've had the computer on for a while.
I am really surprised that so many people, just in this community, are having this problem -- something definitely needs to be done about it!
Just out of curiosity, of the people having this problem, who skeeps their computer 99% of the time and only restarts when absolutely necessary (system updates mainly)? Because I only noticed the problem after I've been running my computer for a few days without a restart...that could have something to do with it, if ya'll do the same thing...?
Hmm...interesting...do you have iTunes (4.x) open most of the time as well? I've pretty much got it on constantly when it's not sleeping. Hmm, that's weird...what else could it be...?
did it start happening soon after you installed the iTunes 4.01 update? I think that it might be a bug which they had previously fixed, but somehow re-introduced. Because it mainly only seems to happen for me when iTunes is running; it hasn't happened since the X.2.6 update, but it started up again right after I installed the iTunes 4.01 update.
This is the only thing I can think of that could be causing it, that's different on my mac than people's who don't have the problem: I use Fire for AIM, not iChat. Do you use a non-ichat chat program by chance?

Xjournal is a thoroughly excellent product. fraserspeirs has done and continues to do a fantastic job with the program. And we all like it so much that we just bought him a 17" Powerbook ;-)
"Except I can't figure out how to edit previous entries with it, I don't think it's possible yet."
You're right, it's not possible yet. Fraser has lead us to believe that it (and much more) are coming soon.
Wow, sweet! What do I have to do for you to buy me a new 17" PowerBook? hehe. Actually I'm pretty satisfied with the $900 discount I got on my 15" 1.0ghz loaded PB from my college's Apple store on-campus... :)
I'll be looking forward to the next release of Xjournal!

Thanks for the props. What gwynn_aaron says is true - I have mostly implemented in-client editing for the next release. There's one or two bugs yet to be worked out, but it's not far off. I just handed in a thesis draft today, so the light at the end of the tunnel is growing stronger :-)
I've downloaded xJournal in an attempt to switch from iJournal, but once I download it and the program installs, I double click the application and then nothing happens. I've attempted this several times. I'm running X.1.5, do I need to have Jaguar in order to run this program?
That addresses the idea that it happens when you use the volume controls on the keyboard, but I've also heard that it happens when you plug in/out the headphones. My theory is that the computer tests the resistance of either channel and changes the balance to balance them (which would make an even volume on mis-matched speakers). This would mean that if the headphones were inserted in a way that made the speakers APPEAR unbalanced when it tested, the balance would drift improperly. Either way, the problem is Apple's, and hopefully Leopard has fixed it.
